Monika Melichar came to Canada from Czechoslovakia as a little girl in 1968, after the ‘Prague Spring’ had been suppressed by the Soviet army and other troops of the Warsaw Pact. She grew up in Toronto, and her mother taught her respect and love for animals. Ever since she was a child, she took care of wounded birds and other animals that required care and were brought to her home. This family passion had been reinforced by studying zoology at a university, working at the Toronto Zoo, and by the twenty years of running a pet store. After gaining such a comprehensive experience, in 2008 Monika decided to set up a sanctuary for wild animals. It is located in the area of Haliburton Highlands, a place where nature is preserved almost intact, near the small village of Minden, in the heart of a dense forest. The sanctuary is supervised by government institutions but, as a charitable organization, it only survives thanks to private donations, and hard day-to-day work of Monika and her husband Whitebear, a member of the Ojibwa nation. There are also a number of dedicated volunteers.
The work in the sanctuary is practically endless: small, orphaned birds need to be fed every 15 minutes, and various animals in need of care are brought regularly from near and far.

Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary is a 100% volunteer-based registered charitable organization that maintains a year round wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary. Injured and orphaned animals are accepted without discrimination of species, rehabilitated and appropriately released back into their natural habitats.

Monika Melichar przybyła do Kanady z Czechosłowacji, jako mała dziewczynka w roku 1968, po zdławieniu ‘praskiej wiosny” przez armię sowiecką i inne wojska Układu Warszawskiego. Wychowywała się w Toronto, a jej mama nauczyła ją szacunku i miłości do zwierząt. Już od dziecka opiekowała się zranionymi ptakami i innymi zwierzętami, które wymagały troski i były przynoszone do domu. Ta rodzinna pasja została ugruntowana studiami zoologii, pracą w torontońskim ZOO i dwudziestoletnim prowadzeniem sklepu zoologicznego. Po zdobyciu tak wszechstronnego doświadczenia, w 2008 roku Monika zdecydowała się założyć sanktuarium dla dzikich zwierząt. Idealną lokalizacją okazała się okolica małej osady Minden w Haliburton Highlands, w samym sercu gęstego lasu, gdzie przyroda zachowana jest w stanie niemal dziewiczym. Sanktuarium nadzorowane jest przez uprawnione instytucje rządowe, ale jako organizacja charytatywna, utrzymuje się wyłącznie z prywatnych donacji, a istnieje dzięki codziennej, ciężkiej pracy Moniki i jej męża Wipera, Indianina z plemienia Ojibwa. Pomagają im liczni wolontariusze.
Praca w sanktuarium praktycznie nie ma końca: małe, osierocone ptaszki wymagają karmienia co 15 minut, a z najdalszych okolic, przywożone są regularnie rozmaite, potrzebujące opieki zwierzęta.
