Norwegian King Haakon V built Akershus Castle in 1290 A.D. to protect Oslo from maritime attack, notably Sweden. Never captured in battle, it also served as a Norwegian prison. Without combat, Akershus Fortress was surrendered to occupying Axis forces (1940 – 1945). It serves as a functioning military area and museum today.

In 1973, Kitchener’s stately 1924 city hall was demolished for urban renewal. In 1995, the clock tower was restored near the park’s east entrance, becoming a beloved city emblem. Don Drews
